What is periodontal disease?

The first stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis, caused by plaque creating gum inflammation. Plaque is the combination of saliva, bacteria, glycoproteins and sugars binding together on the surface of teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease destroys the gums and bones that keep teeth in their place. Eventually, your pet’s teeth might fall out or they’ll need to be extracted, depending on the state of their gums and bone structure. This disease can also affect other internal organs like the heart, kidney, lungs and brain.

How likely is my pet to get periodontal disease?

It’s estimated that over 85% of dogs and cats have a type of periodontal disease. It is a painful and uncomfortable experience for pets so it’s important we do what we can to protect your pet from getting it. It’s a preventable disease that can be treated if you’re aware of the signs. These include your pet having bad breath, chewing on one side of their mouth, loss of appetite, flinching when you attempt to touch their face and excessive drooling.
